Child Tax Credit

The Child Tax Credit is given to taxpayers for each qualifying dependent child under the age of 17.  Legislation passed in December 2017 doubled the refundable amount from $1000 to $2000 per child for taxpayers with at least $3000 in earned income.  Consult a tax professional for eligibility and refund criteria.

Earned Income Tax Credit

The U.S. Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Earned Income Credit (EIC) is a refundable tax credit for low to moderate income working individuals and families,.  The amount of the refund depends on the recipient's income and number of children.  To qualify for the EITC you must be working (have an earned income), be a U.S. Citizen or legal alien for the entire tax year, and have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) for yourself, spouse (if filing jointly), and any qualifying children.
The Earned Income Tax Credit is an income safety-net program designed to protect the working poor from extreme poverty.  The term "earned income" generally refers to income obtained through labor by participating in the workforce.  Earned income includes hourly wages, salaries, bonuses, commissions, and tips.  Union strike benefits and long-term disability benefits received prior to the minimum retirement age are also considered "earned income."  In addition, Non-employee compensation (Form 1099 - Box 7) for independent contractors qualifies for this category.  Income reported elsewhere on the 1099 form does not qualify.
Earned Income Tax Credits are for low-income workers, with or without children.  Those with children under age 17 at the end of the calendar year are credited $1,000 per child.  The Child Tax Credit is a credit for having dependent children under the age of 17 regardless of income.  If eligible, you can claim both credits.
